About Who We Are
Here at Trinity Church Port Arthur our passion is to be an aggressively God-loving, Neighbor-loving, Bible-saturated, Bible-driven, Spirit-filled, racially diverse church knowing and proclaiming the excellencies of Christ for the glory of God and the joy of all people.
We are continually reforming into the image of Christ and more than exercising a religion, we seek to develop an ever growing personal relationship with the King of Glory.
About What We Believe
We are a Bible-Believing, Christ-Centered, Baptist Church that seeks the Glory of God in all we do. Doctrine (another way to say “beliefs, or teachings”) has always been and continues to be an essential part of any church. Statements of Faith are meant to be summaries of the most important beliefs about God, Man, and Salvation.
There are two main documents that explain our beliefs, or doctrine. The Baptist Faith and Message (2000) is a more general, and more brief statement of faith. The London Baptist Confession of Faith (1689) is a more thorough and complete, statement of Biblical Doctrine.
About What to Expect
Worship – In Spirit AND In Truth. According to the Bible, Worship is the ultimate priority for the Church. In fact we can see this clearly in the first four of the Ten Commandments given to Moses in Exodus 20. In these four commands, we are told:
- Whom to worship
- How to Worship
- The Manner of Worship
- When to Worship
Jesus reiterates the primacy of worship in John chapter four when he tells the woman at the well, “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.”
Many people will wonder what to expect in when visiting a Lord’s Day (Sunday) Service. It is our aim that you will be warmly welcomed. It is our deep desire that you will sense the Glory of Christ and see us gazing upon God, through singing, praying and preaching God’s Word. In a nutshell our service is simple and reverent, while focusing on the exposition, explanation and application of the Word of God.
At Trinity Church Port Arthur we strive to reform our Worship to that which is pleasing to God. We don’t attest to do this perfectly. With the help of the Holy Spirit, these are some distinctives that unify us in our corporate worship of God on the Lord’s Day:
God-Centered. Our ultimate aim and focus is God. There is a high priority on the vertical focus of Sunday Morning worship.
Spirit-Led. We earnestly seek His presence. We believe that in corporate worship God draws near for His glory, our good and the salvation of unbelievers in the midst.
Bible-based. God’s Word should permeate every aspect of our gatherings: singing, praying, preaching and testimony.
Head and Heart. We believe John 4:23 teaches us that our deepest affections and highest thoughts belong to God in worship. We will not seek to manipulate emotions by failing to think clearly about spiritual things based on shareable evidences outside ourselves.
Earnestness and Intensity. We will seek to avoid being shallow, superficial or frivolous, but instead aim to set an example of reverent passion and broken-hearted joy. This does not mean that we expect a certain “coldness” or “deadness” to our worship. On the contrary, worship should evoke our deepest devotions and praises. It does mean, as you will read below, that we should not be driven by our emotions in such a way as to attract attention to ourselves and draw attention away from the Lord.
Authenticity. We do not pursue an atmosphere of artistic performance but of a radically personal encounter with God and truth.
“He MUST increase and I MUST decrease.” John 3:30. In every facet of our worship, we desire that Christ be exalted, “increased,” while we are humbled, “decreased.” Anything that exalts man MUST be decreased. Therefore, the focus of our worship is not on the performance of man.
Those who happen to be leading in worship on any given Sunday are to be focused on exalting God, therefore, they do not seek the applause of man. You may hear applause and lively praises, but we continually strive to see that they are always directed towards God and not man. Our music varies in style and language. You will hear both English and Spanish sung, prayed, spoken and preached in this church. We truly believe what the Scripture has said, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28
Un-distracting Excellence. We will strive to sing, play and preach in such a way that peoples’ attention will not be diverted from the substance because of shoddy ministry or excessive finesse. We will invest in equipment good enough to transmit heartfelt truth.
Blending of Historic and Contemporary music. While it is worthy to strive to become all things to all people, it is virtually impossible to please all people in styles of worship. Our object is to please God and not man.
We believe there are different tunes, texts and genres that may awaken our affections and thoughts toward God. We will strive to be who we are without exalting our own tastes as the standard of excellence.
